After a big windstorm last week, we found this little guy in our lawn with no way to get back into his nest. We were fine just letting him hop around the yard until he started becoming a little too interested in Tyler mowing the lawn. He almost got himself run over more than once.
So then we tried to catch him. And he ran in the street in front of an oncoming car. Suicidal, maybe? We chased him all over to get him out of the street and out of danger, but he was so fast! And all the while, mama and daddy bird were chasing us around and squawking like crazy. I'm sure it was quite a site for the neighbors.
When we finally captured the little bugger we put him in a box under the tree where his nest was while Tyler finished mowing the lawn. A little while later, Tyler went out to give him a bowl of water and found mama bird in the box with him feeding him worms. Turns out she didn't mind the new nest situation. The wind kept blowing, though, and the next time we checked on him, the box had tipped over and the birdie was nowhere to be found. Since there was no longer any danger of getting run over by the lawn mower, we decided that wherever he was, he was probably okay. But I must admit that I was sad to see him go.
